Will work for...directions

So Friday was my first time, volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club, in two weeks because of October Break.  The great thing was that I have my car now so I was able to drive to the Club instead of ride the bus.  The bad thing was that I arrived ten minutes late because I got lost despite that it was only three miles from campus.  I didn’t realize that there were so many one-way streets.  I did eventually get there without my GPS so I was really proud of myself.  There were not very many volunteers this Friday, just four fraternity guys and me, so we did not have a big group activity.  The kids didn’t have any homework so we spent the first hour doing Halloween worksheets and coloring pictures.  The kids seemed to be bored with coloring by the end of the hour.  They all seemed to have weird color choices for their pictures because they only chose dark colors and nothing cheery.  After coloring the kids got to play in the gym or watch a movie.  Several little girls wanted me to watch the movie with them so we went to the theater room to watch Alphas & Omegas.  It was a really cute movie about this pack of wolves that learned that an Alpha wolf could date an Omega wolf.  One of the little girls only made it through about fifteen minutes before she left the room.  After the movie the little girl who left convinced me to play ping-pong with her and another one of the volunteers.  The game was pretty boring because she couldn’t hit anything so the other volunteer and I started talking about Purdue.  The little girl actually managed to hit the ball to us and we missed it since we were talking.  She got really upset and told us and we couldn’t talk anymore.   We had to do the whole zip your lips and throw away the key thing for her.  She was cute and kept insisting that we couldn’t even laugh.  When people tell me that I can’t laugh then it makes me laugh even harder so she kept stopping her foot and telling me to stop.  It was a fun day but I was glad that it was over.

Until next time...

  1. Working with kids can be really tiring. I'd be glad the day was over too. One summer i worked all day at sports camps for underprivileged kids, and they were terrible. They never wanted to do any of the drills, they never listened, and during snack time they would always throw their food; like crazy monkeys. At the end of the day I would be tired and filled with hate for all children. I vowed never to have children after that camp.
Now that I look back on those days I feel like that was right where I was supposed to be because those kids needed to be in a positive enviornment just like the ones you work with at the Boys and Girls Club. I'm sure your experience wasn't as bad as mine, but I think you'll understand where I'm coming from. Good Luck.

  2. Okay, to be honest, the first thing I want to ask is if any of the fraternity boys were cute? (: haha But on a serious note I really like following your blog. I like volunteering at the Veterans’ Home but I think I would be better at the Boys and Girls club. I really enjoy working with kids! I understand how frustrating it is to play a game with a little kid that cannot really play the game though. When I would babysit my neighbors they would always want to play volleyball with me because I played volleyball. Lets just say I would run after the ball more than hit the ball! It is really cool though knowing that the little kids look up to us! I also can relate to you not being able to stop laughing! That happens to me all the time! It always seems to happen when I’m supposed to be really quiet! I can’t wait to read your next update! (:

  3. I am so jealous of you. I really wish I had my car, primarily just so I could use it to get to the Veteran's Home without spending $40 on a taxi every time. Last time I went there I did not even have enough money to get back, thankfully I was working with another student from Purdue so she gratefully drove me home. Why do I not take the bus, you ask? Well, primarily because the Home is on the Happy Hallow bus route, and this is by far the worst route. In order to even get to the Home, you have to call in advance and tell the bus that you need to go there, also, you need to tell them that you will need to be picked up. Not only do you have to call, but the bus runs on the craziest schedules and it never seems to overlap with the times that I am working at the Home. I am so busy and it is extremely hard for me to open up 3 hours of my day so I can get my service, and I need a mode of travel that will get me there when I need to, I cannot work around the bus's schedule.
