So I was really excited to go back to the Boys & Girls Club on Friday since I wasn’t able to go on Monday due to a night exam. It was a good day because there were only five other volunteers so there were enough of us for a group activity with the kids after Power Hour but there weren’t so many of us that each kid had their own volunteer like a few weeks ago. None of the kids of had homework so they all did Halloween themed activity sheets and coloring pages. Watching the kids color is really funny because some of them try really hard and some of them just scribble all of the page with one color, usually black.
The group activity for the day started with a fifteen minute, follow-the-leader walk around the neighborhood. Then there was a game of kickball with two of the older kids being the team captains which made the teams pretty equal. The game was also a good length because the supervisors cut the game off after a few kicking rounds for each team. I was picked with one of the guy volunteers for one the teams and while we were waiting in line for our turn to kick one little girl tried to act as our own personal Kiss Cam.
There was another movie this week for the kids and it was Zoo Keeper. I didn’t get to see it because all the kids who wanted to play with me wanted to play the board games. The games ended up being really cool because they taught me how to play Mancala, a board game with marbles. The point of the game is to try to get all the marbles into your pocket. You pick up the marbles out of one hole and put one into each of the next holes until you run out. You then pick up the ones from the last hole and continue until the hole you put the last marble doesn’t have any other marbles in it. Every time you pass your pocket you drop a marble into it. That was the last thing I did before I left.
Until next time…

The Boys and Girls Club must’ve changed a bunch since I used to go there as a kid. From what you describe you had an exciting day. I agree about the kids coloring. I have an almost three-year-old cousin and her absolute favorite activity is coloring. She hasn’t exactly learned the in the lines concept yet. It’s really cute.
ReplyDeleteAs for a walk around the neighborhood, that sounds fun. I loved follow the leader as a kid. It’s fun and exercise so it kills two birds with one stone. It’s always important for kids to have a fun outlet that also doubles as an activity to help get their heart rates up. Dodge ball works that way too. I was never good at dodge ball back in school so I didn’t like it at all but I remember that other kids would go absolutely crazy about it. In the age of technology, finding a fun way for kids to stay healthy is paramount.
