I only volunteered once this week at the Boys & Girls club because of October Break. There were a lot of other volunteers there on Monday this week to because several of the Purdue Pharmacy clubs were there for community service. In fact, there were so many volunteers that each child had at least one if not two volunteers helping them. The weather was amazing so after Power Hour I helped the staff lead the children on a “Follow the Leader” walk through the neighborhood around the club. After the walk we also played a game of volunteer versus kids kickball. There was a little girl, America, who was only five that needed help to run the bases. During the walk and the game I ended up with several little girls that wanted my undivided attention. Once we went back inside all the girls wanted me to play with them and of course they all wanted to do something different. We compromised by doing what each of them wanted to do for a little while; we played basketball, jump rope, and ping pong. I also ended up in the craft room making owl puppets with one girl who said she needed to talk to me alone. So when she talked to me the first thing she said was “you know that thing I talked to you about the other day.” That thing was that she “liked” one of the boys who also goes to the Boys & Girls Club. She wanted to know how to tell if he liked her too. The first time I told her to spend time with him when they were at the club. The second time she wanted to know how to tell for sure but she shot down my idea for asking him or having her friends ask him. We finally settled on the idea of her writing a note and having him check yes or not for whether he liked her. She had me take the note to him and then bring it back to her; he checked yes. It was so funny and reminded me of how simple life really was when we were in elementary school. Sometimes I wish life was that simple again.
Until next time…

It was so nice all of this week, glad the kids got to get outside and enjoy the fresh air! It is funny that the little girls all wanted you to themselves. It is great that you are a role model for them and that they all want to spend time with you and want you’re grow up advice on things.
ReplyDeleteIt is so nice how simple things seem for them even though for them it is all very nerve wrecking and scary. Soon they will see that the little stuff is fun and doesn’t have to be scary.
Glad you got to help that girl out and very very glad that the boy checked yes. That is a big deal for them!
It is great that you are enjoying this!
That is such an adorable post! I used to teach German to some little kids at an elementary school where I live and I can completely understand how overwhelming it is for all of them to want your attention all at once! It was really hard sometimes to think up how you can incorporate everything that each child wants to do without leaving anyone out! You had a really good idea though by taking each of their ideas and doing one thing with each of them for a little bit. I think it's so cute that the little girl came to you for love advice! I can't say I've ever had that happen to me before! But that was a cute idea of what you had them do I love it! I also didn't know that the Pharmacy kids were volunteering at the Boys and Girls club too, that's really nice! It sounds like they have a really good amount of volunteers there!
ReplyDeletehi
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard that the Pharmacy clubs were volunteering at the Boys and Girls club I thought of you! It's probably nice to recognize some familiar faces! It is nice that each kid was able to get help but was there too much help? Do prefer volunteering there when there is a lot of help or just the “normal” amount? The reason I ask is because one time at the Veterans’ Home there was a group of high school students there to help and there was too much help. It is nice that people want to help but sometimes it is a waste when there is not much to do.
ReplyDeleteIt’s so cute that the little girls like to play with you. Back home I have a lot of younger neighbors and they would always ask me to play with them when I would be outside. Your experience really reminds me of them because they would never agree on what they wanted to play. I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself at the Boys and Girls club! I hope things continue to go well!
